“A heretic is any baptized person, professing Christianity, and choosing for himself what to believe and what not to believe as he pleases, in obstinate opposition to any particular truth which he knows is taught by the Catholic Church as a truth revealed by God.” –M. History of Romanism
WH0004 Histor of Romanism pp 541 542

“From the birth of popery . . . to the present time, it is estimated by careful and credible historians, that more than fifty millions of the human family have been slaughtered for the crime of heresy by popish persecutors, an average of more than forty thousand religious murders for every year of the existence of popery.  Of course the average number of victims yearly, was vastly greater, during those gloomy ages when popery was in her glory and reigned despot of the world; and it has been much less since the power of the popes has diminished to tyrannize over the nations, and to compel the princes of the earth, by the terrors of excommunication, Interdiction, and deposition, to butcher their heretical subjects.”—History of Romanism, pp. 541, 542.

Vatican again at peace with Italy
WH00013 San Francisco Chronicle Feb 12 1929
The front page of the San Francisco Chronicle of February 12, 1929, carries pictures of Cardinal Gasparri and Mussolini, signers of the Concordat, with the headline “Heal wound of many years.”  The Associated Press dispatch says:  “In affixing the autographs to the memorable document, healing the wound which has festered since 1870, extreme cordiality was displayed on both sides.”  To such a position of influence over the nations is the Papacy finally to attain that just before her complete overthrow and destruction she will say, “I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.”  Revelation 18:7. (See Isaiah 47:7-15; Revelation 17:18.)

Institution of a Supreme head by Christ
WH00017 The Catholic Eccylopedia The Pope Vol XII p 265 268
“Peter and his successors have power to impose laws both perceptive and prohibitive, power likewise to grant dispensation from these laws, and, when needful, to annul them.  It is theirs to judge offenses against the laws, to impose and to remit penalties. This judicial authority will even include the power to pardon sin.  For sin is a breach of the laws of the supernatural kingdom, and falls under the cognizance of its constituted judges.” – The Catholic Encyclopedia, article “The Pope,” Vol. XII, page 265.

“He [the Pope] is not subject to them [the canons of the church], because he is competent to modify or annul them when he holds this to be best for the church.” –Id., page 268

Attitude of the State toward the Church
WH00022 The State and Church Ryan & Miller 1922
“But constitutions can be changed, and non-Catholic sects may decline to such a point that the political proscription (to put on the list of those who may be put to death, outlawed or ostracized) of them may become feasible and expedient.  What protections would they then have against a Catholic State?  The latter could logically tolerate only such religious activities as were confined to the members of the dissenting group.  It could not permit them to carry on general propaganda nor accord their organization certain privileges that had formerly been extended to all religious corporations, for example, exemption from taxation..It is true, indeed, that some zealots and bigots will continue to attack the Church because they fear that some five thousand years hence the United States may become overwhelmingly Catholic and may then restrict the freedom of non-Catholic denominations.  Nevertheless, we cannot yield up the principles of eternal and unchangeable truth in order to avoid the enmity of such unreasonable persons.”

( Ryan and Miller printed by Macmillan Company for National Catholic Welfare Council, 1922.  This book bears the Imprimatur of Archbishop, later Cardinal Hays.  Pages 38 and 39.  Definition of proscription added by editor.)
